The project

  Why ItalianSuiseki
Italiansuiseki.it was born from three friends’ wish to give space to stones, virtual but not unreal space. Stones exist, they are all around us, "we have always been toying with them", we use them to make our floors, our walls and our "roofs", but we almost never appreciate their purely aesthetic qualities raising them as “very” objects.
History teaches us that the Chinese first and the Japanese later have always given great importance to stones, investing them with philosophical and religious meanings hardly understandable by us Westerners.
We don't want to go into the art of "appreciation" of the stones, but we rather want to guide you to the discovery of a world made of unexpected similarities, odd shapes and colours, imagination and fancy, still trying to investigate those basic concepts according to which a stone becomes Suiseki.
Happy surfing then, and don't be sparing either with criticism or appreciation in an open constructive confrontation.
E-mail adress is info@italiansuiseki.it and it is at your disposal for confrontation, requests, remarks, notification of mistakes.

Suiseki life for a lake stone

by Mr.Fabrizio Buccini

As is my habit, also in this article I continue to present stones which after being collected in some more or less remote corner of our beautiful Italy have been transformed from ordinary rocks into wonderful suiseki. The stone I am going to talk to you about in this article represents a basin of water and was collected in a mountain torrent of Liguria.
In the photo on the left  the stone measuring 20 cm in length, 20 cm in width and 14 cm in height, still has a rather rough cleaning.

As many know, this type of stone is in great demand among collectors, both because it is very rare, and because it can be exhibited in spring and summer on daiza or suiban.
Needless to say, it comes into my private collection with full rights enriching it and making it much more important.

Good hunting to all!

The just begun daiza.
Start of production of the legs.
In this type of stone, however, the daiza must be very small, just the necessary support.

The unhewn daiza.
The stone with completed and polished daiza.

Back of the stone.
We can see how the river over the centuries gave the stone a skin with a texture of an almost unique beauty.

Suiseki life

by Mr.Fabrizio Buccini

In the article published in the previous issue I started a series that I wanted to call "suiseki life" : a stone collected in nature, cleaning, construction of daiza, display in our home and, perhaps, in some exhibitions.
All this because I consider important to document how, with great passion after identifying places of collection, everybody can build the daiza for his/her stones with a little patience, thus enjoying their sight in display niches created just for them. In this issue I want t talk about one of my favourite stones which I found in a mountain stream.

The stone begins its way as suiseki in the middle of my small collection of bonsai trees, here it is on display, cuddled, cleaned, and polished.

â–ºConstruction of the daiza, a very simple one considering the type of stone and its conformation

Rome : XVII Spring Exhibition

by Mrs.Daniela Schifano

Rome, May 8th - 9th 2010

Fabrizio Buccini comments for you the suiseki on display in Spring Exhibition  2010, a classic appointment organized by the Cultural Association Roma Bonsai in cooperation with the Vegetable Biology Department of “La Sapienza” University at Rome Botanical Garden.
Fabrizio Buccini, as a judge of Suiseki Section and Daniela Schifano as an exhibitor, have been  guests of the exhibition of Bonsai and Suiseki for years. It is one of the many events taking place in these two days, from the Botanical Garden guided tours to the many educational activities for children.

"Best Suiseki in Exhibition"

Mr. Giuseppe Cordone
Landscape Stone - Waterfall Stone
"The lights of time"
Liguria

"An uncommon example of waterfall stone.
The waterfall flows inside the stone showing maturity and old age.
I think it is an excellent example of waterfall stone in Europe."

"Even the front display is correct because it allows the viewer to "search for" waterfall in the folds of the rock, stimulating imagination and observation."

"The table is fit for the importance of the stone."

Mrs. Daniela Schifano
Object Stone - Human shape stone
"Night of memories"
Liguria

"This human figure stone in a few strokes recalls a female figure in a reflective mood.

The patina is excellent, I think it is a remarkable example of this type of Suiseki."

Out of contest

Mr. Fabrizio Buccini
Landscape stone - Lake stone
Liguria

"The water basin is enriched by the signs of time left by the river where it was collected: folds and wrinkles making its surface older."

This stone, awarded in 2004 in San Marino Republic with the award of ESA (European Suiseki Association), is the protagonist of the article you can read at page :

Mr. Fabrizio Buccini
Object Stone - Hut stone
Liguria

This stone was presented as a well matched element of a rosemary bonsai.

"This stone was a part of the multiple "Reflection", winner of UBI Award in 1998. The hut stone is a kind difficult to find in Italy but extremely popular in Japan as it evokes the concept of an old fisherman's cottage which was abandoned and worn out by time."

Mrs. Daniela Schifano

Landscape Stone - Lake stone
"The countrysides of the dream"
Liguria

"Lake stone exhibited on a suiban of correct colour for the month of exhibition.
The basin has been highlighted by a small quantity of water.
A good quality of this stone is the line of calcite that gently enters the lake, giving the viewer the sensation of a mountain stream that feeds the lake.
A finely aged stone verging on black :  all these features make it a very remarkable suiseki."
